Breaking The Law

Breaking The Law

The notebook entry for March 29, 1985, hints at a moment of disruption on the road. Written near the bottom: “Coffeen St. Sheriff’s Office,” a reference to the Watertown, NY sheriff’s department. There’s no context, just a reminder that when you’re barreling from show to show in a van full of gear, crossing state lines and international borders, sometimes, the authorities get involved.

Above that, venue inquiries trail off with question marks. "Video at 54? No! L’Amour East? Palladium?" The Hell Awaits tour path was sometimes bumpy, and always brutal.

1. Two recognizance forms and bond receipts issued by Milwaukee County Circuit Court for Kevin Reed, Slayer's lighting tech for the US leg of the Hell Awaits tour. The documents relate to traffic violations and include payment records and sheriff’s department paperwork. From the Collection of Doug Goodman
