Slayer destroyed at the inaugural Ozzfest in 1996, when it was still just a two-stop festival in Phoenix, Arizona, and San Bernardino, California. As Ozzfest grew, the band returned as festival favorites in 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2016. The Washington Post declared Slayer's 1999 Ozzfest performance as "the heaviest and fastest on the bill, and for purists, they were the day's best."
