The long-awaited follow-up to 2009's World Painted Blood marked the first release since drummer Paul Bostaph’s return to the band in 2013 and guitarist Gary Holt’s addition to the Slayer touring lineup in 2011. Although Repentless was the first full-length release without Jeff Hanneman, a Hanneman composition was included on the album, and the title track was written as a tribute to Slayer’s longtime bandmate and friend. Rolling Stone called Repentless a “vital, bloodthirsty offering…with furious guitar solos from Kerry King and Gary Holt.”
